Pulitzer Prize-winning author Laura E.Richards often wrote stories exploring man’s capacity for tenderness toward those around him. One such story, “The Hill,” tells of a small boy, discouraged and doubtful that he could ever make it to the top of a large hill. His older and wiser sister tricks him into playing a game in which the two match footprints to see whose is the best. After a while the boy looks up in disbelief.

“Why,” he said, “we are at the top of the hill!”
“Dear me!” said his sister. “So we are!”

Confronted by life’s problems, it often seems easier to despair. Instead of putting one foot in font of the other, confident we can make the climb, we remain stuck at the bottom. Faith is not complacent; faith is a potent mixture of belief and action. It is the big sister advising us to move our feet. When the darkness of despair descends over you, turn to the night-light of faith in possibilities greater than yourself. God has given us the gift to help us on our path to the top of the hill.

Food for thought.
Every tomorrow has two handles. I can take hold of it by the handle of worry, or the handle of faith. Which will I choose?

Learning How to Write in the Sand

Two friends were walking through the desert. In a specific point of the journey, they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face.

The one, who got slapped, was hurt, but without anything to say, he wrote in the sand: "TODAY, MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE".

They kept on walking, until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who got slapped and hurt started drowning, and the other friend saved him. When he recovered from the fright, he wrote on a stone: "TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE".

The friend who saved and slapped his best friend, asked him, "Why, after I hurt you, you wrote in the sand, and now you write on a stone?"

The other friend, smiling, replied: "When a friend hurts us, we should write it down in the sand, where the winds of forgiveness get in charge of erasing it away, and when something great happens, we should engrave it in the stone of the memory of the heart, where no wind can erase it"

Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there... to serve some sort of purpose, teach you a lesson or help figure out who you are or who you want to become. You never know who these people may be but when you lock eyes with them, you know at that very moment that they will affect your life in some profound way.

And sometimes things happen to you that may seem horrible, painful and unfair, but in reflection you realize that without overcoming those obstacles you would have never realized your potential, strength, willpower or heart.

Nothing happens by chance or by means of good luck.

HINA MENJADI MULIA

“..apa yang tidak terpandang dan yang hina bagi dunia, dipilih Allah, bahkan apa yang tidak berarti, dipilih Allah untuk meniadakan apa yang berarti,” 1 Korintus 1:28.

Dalam setiap kehidupan manusia selalu ada kekurangan dan kelebihan. Saat seseorang mulai membandingkan dirinya dengan orang lain yang lebih kaya atau memiliki kedudukan yang tinggi, ia akan merasa rendah diri (minder). Padahal kalau kita renungkan, kesuksesan tidak hanya diukur dari banyaknya harta atau pangkat yang kita raih dalam karier. Ada orang yang berlimpah harta tetapi hidupnya tidak pernah ada damai, selalu ada pertengkaran antara suami, istri dan juga anak atau kesehatannya terganggu (sakit-sakitan) . Seseorang bisa dikatakan sukses apabila orang tersebut mampu melewati setiap tantangan dan berhasil menjadi pemenangnya. Memang ini tidak sernudah membalik telapak tangan, butuh usaha dan kerja keras.

Kemiskinan, kelemahan fisik (cacat tubuh), tingkat pendidikan yang rendah, bukanlah penghambat meraih sebuah kata: sukses, asalkan orang tersebut mempunyai tekad yang tinggi dan tahu kepada siapa Ia harus percaya dan berharap. Tertulis demikian, “Diberkatilah orang yang mengandalkan Tuhan, yang menaruh harapannya pada Tuhan! Ia akan seperti pohon yang ditanam di tepi air, yang merambatkan akar-akarnya ke tepi batang air, dan yang tidak mengalami datangnya panas terik, yang daunnya tetap hijau, yang tidak kuatir dalam tahun kening, dan yang tidak berhenti menghasilkan buah.” (Yeremia 17:7-8). Sia-sialah berharap dan mengandalkan apa yang kita miliki karena tanpa penyertaan Tuhan kita akan jatuh. Tetapi saat kita menyerahkan seluruh kehidupan kita ke dalam tangan-Nya, maka yang hina dan dianggap rendah dunia justru akan Tuhan pakai untuk menyatakan kebesaran-Nya.

Dalam keadaan apa pun jangan pernah merasa malu menjadi anak Tuhan karena status kita yang mungkin dipandang sebelah mata oleh dunia; sesungguhnya kita berharga di mata-Nya. Tuhan sendiri berkata, “....engkau berharga di mata-Ku dan mulia, dan Aku ini mengasihi engkau,...” (Yesaya 43:4). Terkadang Tuhan ijinkan kita harus mengalami proses yang menyakitkan hingga pada saatnya kita akan muncul sebagai mutiara iman yang menjadi kesaksian bagi dunia ini.

Pasti Bisa

Seorang pemain gelandang University of Louisiville bermimpi ingin menjadi pemain football yang profesional. tetapi sayang waktu udah di wisuda ternyata tidak ada satupun klub yang berniat menawarinya masuk dalam tim mereka. Anak muda ini tidak menyerah begitu saja, dia lalu mencoba mengirim lamaran ke beberapa tim dan akhirnya dapat juga kesempatan dicoba di Pittsburgh Steelers. Tapi sekalipun dia udah coba sekeras mungkin, dia akhirnya tetap ditolak juga. Banyak dari teman-temannya bilang, " Kamu tuh sial banget yach! Tempat kamu bukan di sini kali! Udah gantung sepatu aja! Tetapi dia tetap nekat masuk ke klub lain, kirim lamaran, tapi lagi-lagi dia tetap tidak berhasil.

Kebanyakan orang ketika mengalami gagal berkali-kali terus menyerah, namun anak muda ini tetap tidak menyerah. Dia tahu betul bagaimana kemampuannya dan meyakini bahwa suatu saat pasti impiannya menjadi kenyataan. Dia tetap sabar, tekun, terus latihan dan berusaha meraih kesempatan.

Pada suatu saat, dia mendapat undangan untuk dicoba di Tim Baltimore dan.... dia berhasil mencetak tiga gol berturut-turut. Sejak saat itu, kariernya melesat dan dia tercatat menjadi pemain gelandang terbaik yang pernah main di NFL, dialah Johnny Unitas.

Karena kegigihan, kesabaran, ketekunan, kemauan untuk terus berlatih, dan sikap optimis, sang pemuda yang berulang kali ditolak, malah menjadi pemain terbaik di NFL.

Di dalam Tuhan, sebenarnya kita bisa meraih semua mimpi-mimpi kita. Terkadang yang membuat kita gagal itu sebenarnya adalah diri kita sendiri, bukan kegagalannya. Kalau kita fokus pada sasaran mimpi kita dan punya keyakinan kalo kita bisa, pasti suatu saat mimpi kita akan menjadi kenyataan. Tidak semua kesuksesan itu diraih dengan cara mudah dan instan.

Jatuh bangun sewaktu membangun mimpi adalah hal biasa. Hanya orang yang tidak berhenti untuk mencoba yang suatu saat bakal meraih impiannya.

Andalkan Tuhan, bulatkan tekad, dan jangan berhenti untuk terus mencoba, maka suatu saat pasti kesempatan emas terbuka untuk meraih impian.
